ICT in Modification
Gone are the days of traditional note-taking. Apps like Notability and Goodnotes are powerful notetaking apps whose additional features like recording lectures and meetings, annotating PDF’s and sketching diagrams are ideal for collaboration and mind mapping suitable in education and business. If these apps are used on Ipads and Mac devices, they become digital whiteboards while on windows computer it can be accessed through the emulator (Scott, 2022). They have free options as well as affordable yearly subscription. I recommend getting the paid subscription to access all the features and rip the benefits. It also automatically compile the documents.
According to Edwards (2022), Canva is a powerful graphic design tool yet intuitive and user-friendly that students can use in creating school projects that look great and are of professional quality. It has a wide range of features, from poster-making to photo-editing, design layout to online presentations. You name it, Canva got it! Documents made in Canva can be easily linked to social media and be shared with others through email. When it is shared, it is also an interactive document that others can modify. The available template designs will make the job efficient. Just bear in mind that the free option has limited access compared to the paid subscription, however it doesn’t affect the functionality of the software and still perform and deliver quality digital results that can be printed too. Canva is ideal for Commerce students because they can use this for marketing and promotional strategy.
Lesson Plan and Podcast
Creating a podcast allows students to use technology to produce learning resources that other students can share and access as revision resources (Teach.COm with edX, 2022). Each student will have a different task, and their interest can be incorporated in it, expanding their learning, and making their learning experience unique. The lesson plan is about a family holiday trip planned by the student (Chapman, et al., 2020). Each family has different preferences and activities that they would like to do during a trip, like visiting museums, historical places, art galleries, beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, caves, animal sanctuaries, reserves, botanical gardens and etc. The list is endless! Imagine the wide range of interests from the class “experts” that is impossible to learn and teach by one person in a short time. Because of this, each student will research according to their family’s pick, and when this is shared within their group, expansion of learning happens. What if there is a family that is interested in caves, just visualise the glossy, shiny stalagmites and stalactites in various unimaginable forms created by nature. This enlargement and diversification of learning can only occur through technologically modified lessons. Incorporating technology would capture this amalgamation of learning, and other groups would have the chance to pocket those valuable information. Who knows where this leads students to? As an educator, this is exciting and promising, opening a whole new world of wonders and learning
ICT in Redefinition
Wikipedia (2023), states that iMovie can be used to create and edit basic videos. It comes free on the Apple device. Though it is designed for amateur users, it has features like video effects, colour correction and image stabilisation that can produce professional video quality. Students can easily add images, presentation, video and audio recordings to it. Gaps in videos or unnecessary parts can be cut out and can be replaced. The trimmer feature allows editor to decide the length and timing of the clip.
In Commerce, students can use iMovie in making short promotional ad and videos on tips, tricks and advice. Zoom conferences can be recorded and added to the video.
VoiceThread (n.d.), is an interactive presentation tool with plenty of mixed media sources through which teachers and students interact with each other and can leave comments, questions and feenbacks on each slide presentation in text, audio, and video form (Guan, 2009). It digitises discussion and learning Edwards, 2021). Students can work collaboratively on group projects. It has plenty of ready-to-use templates can be customised. Audio recordings can be added to the presentation and make it better. A script can be prepared ahead of time to ensure that all important topics are covered and included. This can also be used for making virtual tour.
Commerce students can use this in their tourism activity, identifying different tourist spots and the history and culture of that place. In consumerism and financial decision, a financial consultant can add his commentary by activating the webcam and be part of that presentation.
Students are required to work in groups and digitally collaborate to integrate the different components of their tasks and make them as a whole. The students are going to use multimodal tools to achieve the learning goal. The lesson is about Affluenza, and the students will create a documentary probing into the social and consumerism issue affecting the financial decisions of many young Australians (Consumer Affairs Victoria, n.d.). They need to have an interactive document when brainstorming, breaking down the tasks and mind mapping, that they can update with the progress of their work. They will contact specialists in different fields to give their expert advice like financial consultants from a bank who can discuss credit card max out, debt and bankcrupcy, an environmental agency that deals with textile waste, psychologist who can give their professional insights on the mental state of shopaholics and the impact of affluenza on young people, and shopaholics who can share their personal experiences and the impact of declaring bankcrupcy in their 20’s (Consumer Affairs Victoria, n.d.). These cohorts of expert will offer insightful advices to solve poor financial management and they can be from another country to give a global perspective on the prevalence of Affluenza. They can then publish the video to create awareness to the broader community. The learning outcomes of this activity is only attainable through technology.
